Gage’s forest is the setting for primitive interaction, like forests in Shakespeare or Spenser. In any other directors’ work, sex between two guys handcuffed to a tree would be mere kink.

Somehow, through the eyes of Gage, it becomes a symbol of man’s fate. Even how they get cuffed there together is Gage-ian, male, morose magic. There’s a moment when a man says, “Nature is calling” which is rife with vibrating layers of meaning. There’s a moment when a mature man says to an insecure youth who’s just cummed all over him, “You did good” to which any man who’s ever been either young or old will weep. There’s a stand-off moment with men of three different ages standing, their pricks out of their pants to pee, which you will never forget. It’s like the start of a hundred stark gunfights in major-movie streets. Basically, Gage’s work relates to the American Myth of Manhood. It relates lovingly, reverently, nostalgically, angrily, sarcastically, and almost always sadly. It bears comparison with the work of John Ford and Sam Peckinpah. A man in a Gage movie staring at his own or another dick, or both, is going through a million melodramas of shame and power and resignation and despair and joy, and takes you right along with him. The disk’s “Bonus” stuff is swell, but somehow putting bonus stuff on a Joe Gage movie is like putting prizes in caviar. Cast is Ago Viara, Antonio Milan, Bill Madison, Chad Manning, Dean Flynn, Joe Strong, Kurt Wild, Leed Scott, Luke Riley, Matthew Ford, Rick Powers, and Wolf Hudson.

Stunning use of widescreen for a stunning star in ROMAN’S HOLIDAY (FalconStudios.Com)! Roman Heart is too handsome to believe. Does anybody ever actually get a piece of something that pretty for free? In each of his three scenes in this excellent Buenos Aires fuck-movie, I kept expecting his sex-partners to hand him money when the cumming was done--lots of money! His face is like Rob Lowe, his body is like romantic sculpture. With one shapely leg lifted back so he may more easily get his asshole sucked, he looks like something off of the Parthenon. All-action but with a decided sense of place, time, and character is UP COUNTRY (RidgelineFilms.com). This lovely-looking outdoor movie (looks like California wine country) has very well-thought-out compositions and well-chosen colors (see sample). Gray-green hills set off red pants and checkered tablecloths. Chalk-blue sky silhouettes everything. Men look nicely naked against a pale pink barn, a rusty stable wall, dark lime-green hedges, or for that matter against a cordovan leather couch. Vineyard-owner Jason Ridge (also producer, writer, and director) is as charming as ever, and very generously gives most of the movie to his very varied cast of friends and farmhands. YOUNG BOYS ON THE SIDE (VCAPictures.Com) Old joke: “Ya gettin’ any on the side?” “Nope, didn’t know they’d moved it!” Well, they haven’t. Two loony lovers (nerdy Aaron Michael Davies and model-perfect Jimmy Clabots, depicted in a softcore moment) compete against The Three Jaspers (read “Heathers”) in a “who can fuck the most butt contest,” with a world-class weightlifter as the prize.
