August 27, 2006 … It’s been an eventful week. You can do anything you want as a celebrity, as long as it sells movies.  I blogged about this earlier this year, and Paramount finally dumped Cruise.  Tom should take lessons from Travolta, a fellow Scientologist.  You don’t have to be a freak just because you believe in something.

About the only thing that will save Tom now is to come out and say he’s gay.  Along with other closeted stars: Keanu Reeves, Vin Diesel, and Jake Gyllenhaal!  Funny how his press has been so bad that coming out would be a good thing for his career!

Speaking of bad press, Mel Gibson is having a tough time of it.  Seems like all anyone has to do these days when something goes awry is check into rehab.  Some might suggest I do that after some of my blogs - but frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.  Let them eat cake - yellow with chocolate icing.

Here’s an upapologetic pitch.  If you are a left oriented thinker, and aren’t too happy with the current administration (like me - see picture left), you should regularly check out the DailyKos Report.  It’s the best blog on the web.

In gay porn news, after just receiving his two silver medals at this year’s OUT Games in Montreal COLT Man Brad Patton is in San Francisco training for his September 2nd charity ice Skateout extravaganza performance…  We’ve seen a whole lot of Mr. Patton recently in Buckshot’s Beyond Perfect but now we get to see him glide on ice up close and personal.  Brad will be donating his time for a great cause, skating to Martha Wash’s performance of It’s Raining Men and more! Lucas Travels to the Middle East and more …

August 20, 2006 … Busy week in porn and in the news. In a release from LucasEntertainment, Michael Lucas will travel to Israel to reach out to those affected by the war.  Lucas will act as both a war correspondent and a source of entertainment during his time abroad. While there, he will also perform in a live sex show with Jack MacCarthy at Male VOX in Tel Aviv.  “Hopefully I can bring excitement where it is needed most.  During times of war, outlets for sexual energy and expression are bleak, let alone moments for celebration.  I look forward to bringing gay men together, and I will work hard to put on the greatest show for them,”  said Michael Lucas.

Homophobia and anti-semetism abound in the middle-east. Lucas intends to support the cause for equality.  We will cover this in more depth upon his return with stories, photos and footage.

Quinceanera the Movie

August 1, 2006 … A Shameless Editorial / Review - Nice Guys Finish First …

This is a special week for the gay community.  One of our own has remained true to his passion and integrity.  From humble beginnings across the pond (England), Wash West has always had a vision. Throughout his life, he has engaged his fellow man with a smile and focus that not only brought forth his best work, but afforded all those around him with an opportunity to be their best.

I first became aware of Mr. West without knowing it, as a young man confused about his own sexuality. I saw one of his earlier works, “The Fluffer”.  TLA Releasing brought it to the screen and Wash West was on his way.  He didn’t become rich from this venture, but I suspect he became encouraged.  While a simple story, it had a heart, which is a signature of any project West develops.

A stint in the porn industry brought Jet Set their biggest hit with “The Hole” and this film turned an industry upside down.  It was at this point that a Director proved that the gay adult community enjoyed a story along with their sexual entertainment.  Every major porn company scurried to copy, although none never as well. In reality, most porn companies are just that.  They are neither artists nor film makers. Wash is both.

West (on the right), teamed with long-time life-partner Richard Glatzer, envisioned a film set in their community - a story they knew well.  They called it Quinceanera.  Armed only with an idea, West and Glatzer got financing, and in less than a year wrapped the film and went on to win the prestigious Sundance film festival.  I had been privy to the screenplay and knew something special was headed our way.  This was not any old movie. It had West’s signature, a story about real people. It gracefully guides you through their lives and the lessons and growth that their story offers.

When I attended the screening, I knew what was coming.  But nothing intellectual can prepare you for the emotions that West and Glatzer create.  You will laugh and cry.  You can’t help but care about these characters and their lives.  Quinceanera is a great movie because it’s a story about authentic people.  The vehicle of the film is unique, and the timeless quality is derived from the truth and soul of the story.

What’s even more special is that West has been true to his spirit throughout his career.  He is as successful as a man as he is as a gay man, as he is as a Director.  Los Angeles and the entertainment industry are about as authentic as an honest politician.  West is to be commended on climbing the ladder and not stepping on anyone on the way up. 

You owe it to yourself to see Quinceanera.  It’s more than a movie. It’s a symbol of dreams and success. It’s a shining beacon of light for hope in each of our dreams.  Congratulations to Wash and Richard. Nice guys can finish first.
