July 16, 2006 … Last night I attended the 19th Annual Night of the Stars presented by the Free Speech Coalition.  Sure it’s a nice get-together with the adult industry.  Straight and gay - they’re all there.  Glamorous women with voluptuous breasts, and hot men in leather pants.  And, as the business is truly a business, more suits that you can imagine!

Last year the awards dragged on - and since they happen before dinner, it’s easy to get a tad drunk and cranky from hunger.  This year, the FABULOUS Roma, along with Tim Valenti (of NakedSword.com fame) hosted the event.  They kept the pace and their comic asides were as good, well maybe better that some years, of the Academy Awards.  Thank God for them.  The only time the evening slowed was when the Free Speech people had to talk - but Tim and Roma cracked their whip and kept it all going. 

Michael Brandon was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Best Gay Actor.  For those of you who have seen the “monster”, you know he’s hung.  What you may not know is that he is even hotter in a suit.  Yes, he was wearing an elegant, tailored suit and he looked more seductive than I have ever seen him.  He was there with his other half, and if true love were ever alive with any couple - it was here.  His acceptance speech was humble and thoughtful (quite a contrast to last years drunken embarrasment with Jeff Stryker). Congrats on the award, Michael - well deserved for years of hard work.

Also of note was a special treat.  I had the opportunity to chat with John Rutherford, the brains behind Colt Studios.  Typically, powerful people like John are hard to reach, let alone connect with.  He had to be one of the warmest people I’ve encountered.  He is the kind of person that makes me proud to be part of the adult industry.  He has such a great vision for Colt.  It’s in great hands and you can rest assured that your DVD collection has a lot to look forward to.  Expect more on the GayPornSpace site from Colt soon.  John was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Best Gay Director.

Amist all the glam and glitter, a sobering message was ever-present.  Our freedoms aren’t free.  We’ve fought for them since the birth of this great nation.  And the fight never ends.  If small, fractional groups like the religious right shout loud enough, (and no one shouts back), then they can change the lives of all Americans, and take away your right to enjoy adult entertainment.  We must stand with one voice and shout back.
